Final Statement of the Syrian Christian Consultative Meeting
On March 16, 2025, a Syrian Christian Consultative Meeting was held in Södertälje, Sweden, convened by the European Syriac Union (ESU) and the Assyrian Monitor for Human Rights, with the participation of distinguished independent Christian figures from various regions of Sweden.
During the meeting, participants discussed the current situation in the country, the optimal political system and constitution, and the Christian role in Syria. The discussions centered on the principle of equal citizenship as the guarantor of the rights of all Syrians, emphasizing the importance of restoring and strengthening the Syrian national identity to reflect the cultural, religious, and national diversity that characterizes Syrian society.
Participants stressed the need for coordination among Christian forces to establish effective representation in the country, and to address any national entitlement responsibly. Participants concluded that building Syria's future requires a just political system and a constitution that ensure genuine citizenship for all Syrians and reflect the Syrian national diversity.
They also emphasized the vital role that Christian civil society can play in promoting dialogue and tolerance, contributing to building state institutions on the foundations of citizenship and competence, and preserving and enhancing Christian heritage.
Participants stressed the need to activate the role of Christian forces and institutions to strengthen the effective Christian presence in Syrian society and contribute to building the future of Syria on the foundations of equal citizenship and justice.
At the conclusion of the meeting, it was agreed to continue these meetings periodically as a consultative platform among Syrian Christian figures in Sweden, with the expansion of participation, through a follow-up committee formed from this meeting.
